Goal & Purpose
The goal of this project was to design a poster that effectively represents the story of Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare, capturing the timeless themes of love, power, and betrayal. I aimed to embed subtle hints of the story’s complexities without revealing too much, encouraging the viewer’s curiosity. Each element—from the layout to the typography and colour palette—was meticulously chosen to reflect the mood and setting of the narrative, creating a balanced and visually captivating piece. The interplay of warm, regal tones and intricate design details highlights the tension and drama between the characters, all while ensuring the essential information is prominently displayed. This approach allowed me to craft a poster that draws the viewer in, inviting them to explore Shakespeare’s classic tale.
Process
I began by considering the style that would best represent the timeless drama of Antony and Cleopatra while resonating with a modern audience. A sleek line-art approach stood out as the ideal choice, lending a minimalist yet sophisticated feel that could bring fresh energy to Shakespeare's classic. Line art, with its simple yet interconnected forms, felt symbolic of Antony and Cleopatra’s complex, tangled relationship—strong, yet fragile.
To reinforce the story’s cultural and emotional backdrop, I incorporated a colour palette inspired by the settings and characters. Earthy, sandy tones nod to Egypt’s warmth and mystique, while vibrant reds symbolize the Greeks, the bravery of gladiators, and the intense passion that drives the characters. The red also hints at the tragic finale, reflecting the drama and depth so typical of Shakespearean works.
Result
The final result surpassed my expectations, capturing both the simplicity and impact I aimed for. The poster not only holds visual weight but also brings a dynamic energy that reflects the intensity of Antony and Cleopatra’s relationship. Subtle line work and carefully chosen colours evoke a sense of movement, pulling viewers into the unfolding drama.
